Under Review

समीक्षाधीन — प्रमाण अपेक्षित

Some of what you read on this site is not yet proven. Those lines are marked — and this is where you can help settle them.

Why we mark things Under Review

The records of this community come from worn manuscripts in old Marwari, from printed books that sometimes disagree with each other, and from memories carried down in families. A great deal of it is sound. Some of it is a best reading of handwriting that has faded, or a name spelled three different ways in three different sources.

Rather than choose quietly and present a guess as a fact, this site shows you which is which. Where two translations of the same page disagree, both readings are printed. Where a village name in a census might or might not be the village you know, the doubt is stated plainly. Nothing here is dressed up as certain when it is not.

Checked against a source

The statement appears in a printed history, an official record such as the 1941 census, or a court document — and where possible in more than one of them independently.

⌛ Under Review

Recorded, not yet proven

A reading of difficult handwriting, an uncertain identification, a family tradition we have not yet matched to a document, or two sources that disagree. Published so it is not lost — flagged so it is not mistaken for proof.

What counts as proof

Anything that can be checked by someone other than the person who remembers it. A photograph of the page or the stone is enough to begin — you do not need to part with anything.

  • Manuscripts and bahis — khyat pages, account books, letters, pattas and grant deeds.
  • Land and revenue papers — jagir records, settlement papers, old rekh assessments, court or tehsil documents.
  • Stone — memorial pillars, devali and sati stones, temple and step-well inscriptions. A clear photograph in raking light, or a paper rubbing, is often readable when the eye is not.
  • Printed books — a page photograph with the title page, so the source can be cited properly.
  • Family trees and old photographs — especially where names and a date are written on them.
  • Testimony from elders — welcome, and recorded as oral tradition. It will be marked as such rather than as documentary proof, which is not a lesser thing: it is simply a different kind of evidence.

What happens to what you send

  1. Your submission goes to the History Committee, not straight onto the website.
  2. The material is compared against the sources already held — the printed histories, the thikana register, the khyat sheets and the census.
  3. If it settles the point, the page is corrected or the Under Review mark is lifted, and your source is cited on the page itself.
  4. If it conflicts with what is already recorded, both are shown and the disagreement is described. We do not delete an inconvenient source.
  5. If the committee needs to see the original, someone will contact you on the number you give.

If you would rather not use the form, send it on WhatsApp instead — the contact details are on the Contact page. Corrections are as welcome as additions. If something on this site about your own family is wrong, we would genuinely rather know.

Send your evidence

You can attach up to ten files. Photographs taken on a phone are perfectly good.

If you would rather send it on WhatsApp, that reaches us just as well — message us there instead →
