The founding village of the entire Patawat clan — granted by Rao Ranmal of Marwar to his son Rao Pato Ji, who is the clan’s common ancestor.
One source states the village’s name comes from goddess Karni — presented here as a naming tradition, not yet confirmed by a citable source.
Karnu is the founding village of the clan: granted to Rao Pato Ji in Samvat 1532 (1475 CE) by his brother Rao Jodha, as a brother's share alongside Chotila and Ridmalsar. It then passed in the line of Kilandas, whose descendants held it — Isardas remained at Karnu while his brother went to Kerla, and Rajsingh after him. From this Karnu house descend the thakurs of Aau, Palina, Barjangsar and Ghantiyali. See Rao Pato Ji and the Genealogy.
